Youth Program Coordinator – Full time

Job Title: Seniors’ Advocate – Hourly (10-14 hours/week as needed)

This opening offers an excellent opportunity to work with a NYC non-profit organization that serves Muslim women and families by addressing domestic violence through crisis intervention, individual and group counseling, advocacy, outreach, education and training. Turning Point is committed to helping Muslim women empower themselves and live a life with dignity and free of violence. It also works with young Muslim women and girls, provides peer support and helps them acquire leadership and interpersonal skills. We are seeking a committed and compassionate Seniors’ Advocate with a passion and patience for assisting to run its ESOL classes, geared towards citizenship, for senior Muslim women.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work closely with and under the supervision of our Seniors Program Coordinator
  • Assist with recruiting seniors for our ESOL classes
  • Assist with facilitating ESOL classes
  • Provide emotional support to senior Muslim women
  • Maintain statistics regarding student attendance/performance etc.
  • Provide administrative support as needed
  • Any other tasks assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

The ideal candidate will be patient, compassionate, and sensitive to the needs of Muslim, predominantly South Asian, senior women. The individual must be comfortable working within NYC’s Muslim community and going into mosques/Islamic Centers. The candidate will have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Other desirable skills include being organized, flexible, creative, and an energetic team player. A commitment of at least two years is required.

The ESOL class is held on Wednesdays and requires the Seniors’ Advocate to be available on Wednesdays, from 10:00am-4:00 pm. The remaining hours are flexible. Please note, this is an in-person position.

Part-Time Youth Leader – (Queens Resident Preferred)

Job Title: Part-Time Youth Leader (QUEENS RESIDENT PREFERRED)

Reports to: Youth Program Director/Coordinator

Description:

This is an excellent opportunity to work with a NYC non-profit organization that works with Muslim women and families to address domestic violence and runs a Youth Program for Muslim girls/young women.

The Youth Leader will be part of a team and work closely with the Youth Coordinator to help expand and strengthen our weekly Youth Group, organize/plan ARISE NY! Workshops and the annual Summit as well as our annual Mecca to Manhattan:Muslim Women Moving Mountains young women’s leadership workshop series. Our weekly youth group provides a safe and nurturing place along with peer support and youth leadership trainings that help teenage Muslim girls/young women gain confidence and develop skills that enable them to become agents of change. Our ARISE NY! Anti-Bullying Project encourages an interfaith exchange and sharing of skills/tools that help youth address issues of racism, Islamophobia, bullying, and hate. Finally, our M2M Workshops connect our young participants with female leaders in the Muslim community. This position offers an excellent opportunity to a young person to learn, grow and develop skills and confidence through hands-on training.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work with Turning Point’s Youth Coordinator to plan, organize, and facilitate ongoing youth programs, including weekly youth group meetings and recruitment of youth members.
  • Work with youth members to further develop ARISE NY!, a youth-led campaign and annual city-wide summit event which seeks to raise awareness among non-Muslim and Muslim youth of bias and hate crimes that target Muslim youth in post-9/11 New York.
  • Help plan and implement the annual spring Mecca to Manhattan: Muslim Women Moving Mountains workshop series, including identifying female Muslim leaders to serve as workshop facilitators
  • Participate in community events and youth-related initiatives with youth members
  • Help with the preparation of regularly scheduled reports
  • Provide administrative support as needed and other tasks as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

The ideal candidate would be a young undergrad or graduate who is eager to work with Muslim and non-Muslim youth, willing to learn quickly and enthusiastic about this position. The individual must be comfortable working within NYC’s Muslim community and going into mosques/Islamic Centers and be able to interact with different people. Other desirable skills include flexibility, creativity, being organized and energetic.

Turning Point for Women and Families (“Turning Point”) is committed to helping Muslim women empower themselves and live a life with dignity and free of violence. RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Document and complete clients’ intake forms
  • Conduct assessments and safety plans
  • Provide individual counseling including crisis intervention and phone counseling to clients
  • Facilitate & co-facilitate support groups
  • Assist clients with public assistance, housing, medical etc. services.
  • Advocate for and educate clients about their rights as survivors of domestic violence.
  • Make referrals and connect clients with legal and immigration services.
  • Maintain accurate and timely case records
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Understand that mosques, schools and community centers are sources of referrals and develop a working relationship with mosques/Islamic centers, schools and colleges
  • Assist with extensive outreach to the diverse New York Muslim community including mosques, Islamic Centers and community-based organizations and inform them about social services available to them
  • Ensure that law enforcing agencies, hospitals, courts and ACS are aware of Turning Point as a resource for Muslim women, girls and families
  • Maintain professionalism both in the office and in the community

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

The ideal candidate will have a licensed MSW (or be prepared to take/pass the license exam within 6 months of employment). Two years’ experience in the area of domestic violence is preferred. The candidate will have a good understanding of the needs of both American-born and immigrant Muslim women living in the New York area. A non-judgmental and empathetic approach is especially important, as is an interest in serving the Muslim community, learning about domestic violence and its impact on Muslim women and families. The ideal candidate will also be a team player, organized, creative, energetic and willing to learn.

Proficiency in written and spoken English, excellent telephone skills and fluency in least one language spoken by the Muslim community, preferably Bangla, Urdu and/or Punjabi is required. A commitment of at least 2-3 years is also required.

This opening is for a new project that Turning Point is launching with a grant from the Department of Justice-Office on Violence against Women (OVW). It offers an excellent opportunity to work with a NYC non-profit organization that serves Muslim women and families by addressing domestic violence through crisis intervention, individual and group counseling, advocacy, outreach, education and training. Turning Point is committed to helping Muslim women empower themselves and live a life with dignity and free of violence. It also works with young Muslim women and girls, provides peer support and helps them acquire leadership and interpersonal skills.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Complete intakes, assessments, and safety plans for clients enrolled in TPNY’s New Beginnings Housing Assistance Project
  • Assess each client’s housing needs and help create a plan for rental housing
  • Assist clients in developing a long-term plan to secure employment and achieve stability
  • Make referrals and connect clients who are seeking assistance in the areas of job training, public assistance, legal services, etc.
  • Provide financial literacy counseling to clients seeking such services
  • Build relationships with real estate agents throughout Queens to identify appropriate and affordable rental units for survivors of domestic violence
  • Build and maintain relationships with partnering community, corporate or charitable organizations
  • Advocate for and educate clients about their rights as survivors of domestic violence
  • Maintain accurate and timely case records
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Assist with extensive outreach to the diverse New York Muslim community including mosques, Islamic Centers and community-based organizations and inform them about social services available to them
  • Provide administrative support as needed
  • Any other tasks assigned
